Goodbye Anxiety!

Is your life immersed in anxiety, worry, fear or disappointment? Anxiety is an illness of the mind that destroys the happiness and beauty of life. It can drain your health and cause a decline in the strength of your mind. Many people battling anxiety also struggle to grow in their spiritual lives.

Anxiety can happen for various reasons. Anxious worries such as the following bring about much unhappiness:

◗ Students wondering whether they will succeed in their education

◗ College students wondering whether they will be able to find a job after graduation

◗ Single people wondering whether they will be blessed with the right marriage partner

◗ Infertile couples wondering whether they will ever have children

◗ Couples wondering whether their marriage will last

Once when I visited a Gulf country that has a large immigrant labor force, I was able to witness many individuals who are living with the ever constant fear of losing their jobs. The people who have jobs seemed so unhappy because they feared that they would lose their jobs at a moment’s notice.

Maybe we have encountered individuals who live with the fear that they will be diagnosed with a terminal illness. “What if I get a heart attack or cancer?” they may wonder. Such thoughts can dim the light of their lives. And when they get a simple headache, it can cause them to proclaim to everyone that they know that it is a brain tumor!

Parents who worry a lot about their children, the middle aged who are imagine old image bedridden and bereft, drivers scared to get behind the wheel for fear of accidents, people worried about what others think, people who lose sleep thinking about financial problems—the list goes on and on. We read or see or experience for ourselves the myriad of worries that arise, burdening humanity with anxiety.

Giving us the cure for anxiety, Jesus Christ says in Matthew 6:25-27: “Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink, or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food and the body more than clothing? Look at the birds in the sky; they do not sow or reap, they gather nothing into barns, yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are not you more important than they? Can any of you by worrying add a single moment to your life-span?“

Anxiety is not a solution to the problems of life; instead it hinders our ability to face and resolve problems. However, we are only human and we have a natural inclination to be anxious. But how can we be delivered from the traps of anxiety?

Saint Paul gives us a remarkable solution to anxiety: “Cast all your worries upon him because he cares for you” (1 Peter 5:7). The situations, people, events—whatever it is that causes us anxiety—can be submitted to the Lord. There are no problems in our lives that God cannot help us with, for our God has said, “I am the LORD, the God of all the living! Is anything too difficult for me?” (Jeremiah 32:27). He cares for us in a beautiful way. It is when we lose our faith and dependence on God that we start getting anxious.

There was a father who was reciting the Rosary, extremely worried about his sick daughter. He wept inconsolably. All of a sudden, he experienced Mother Mary in front of him, speaking aloud: “Dear son, have you forgotten the truth that your daughter has two fathers? She was born to you physically, but it is God in Heaven who created her mind and personality in the most beautiful way. Out of the two, which Father do you think, would love her more? For sure, it is the God of Heaven.”

For God is always watching over her. His divine wisdom knows exactly how to transform this illness for His glory. So submit your daughter to the Heavenly Father, and remain in His peace.”

The anxiety that the father was experience vanished immediately.

If you are prone to anxiety, know always that you are the precious child of the Heavenly Father and that He loves you dearly. When you are deeply affected by anxiety, kneel down and say this prayer: “My Lord and Heavenly Father, You are my beloved Father and Creator. I firmly believe that every event and situation that makes my heart heavy lies beneath Your power. There is nothing that can happen in my life without your knowledge. I believe that whatever happens in my life is only for my well-being. I hereby submit at Your feet the worries that cause heaviness in my heart. Please bless me and free me of anxiety. Amen.”

Another reason for anxiety is the fact that we do not live in the present. Those who worry about tomorrow may find it difficult to take care of their present tasks to the best of their ability. There is no certainty that we will be alive tomorrow. But we do know one thing for certain—our life at this very moment. Today, let us pray fervently, trusting that our future lies safely in the hands of our loving Father. Let us do well what we can today. When we do our tasks well today, then we become more confident about tomorrow. Jesus says “So do not worry about tomorrow: tomorrow will take care of itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own” (Matthew 6:34).

A mind that perpetuates wrong ideas can succumb to anxiety quite fast. Those individuals tend to view the negative side of problems and situations. They are often unable to think logically.

Instead of saying, “Thank God I have a decent job and salary!” they get worried thinking “I wish I had another job with more salary!”

Instead of being happy about owning a house, they are sad that they do not own a house that is bigger than their next door neighbor’s and filled with the latest gadgets and gizmos.

Truly, even wealth is possessed in one’s mind. There is the story that once Saint Francis of Assisi and Brother Leo went out to beg. At the end of the day, they went over to a nearby stream and sat on a rock ready to eat. Saint Francis took out a piece of moldy bread, looked at Brother Leo, and exclaimed with joy, “If you really think about it, aren’t we really blessed, Brother Leo?” Brother Leo was perturbed and replied, “What are you talking about? We are blessed? What do we have other than this moldy piece of bread?”

Saint Francis responded, “Brother Leo, look at this stream with clear beautiful water. God has prepared this drink for us without any effort from us. God has also provided a rock that we can use as a table. How beautiful the sky is above! The sweet song of the chirping birds! We lack nothing. God has provided everything. We truly are blessed, aren’t we Brother Leo?”

The joyful and meaningful words of Saint Francis opened the eyes of Brother Leo. It is not situations or happenings that create anxiety in us–instead it is the attitude with which we approach them. The mind that sees things through God’s eyes will be able to find happiness in any kind of situation.

Moses sent twelve people to check out the land of Canaan. They understood that this land is just like what God had said it to be, “A land flowing with milk and honey.” However, when they realized that the people there were mighty and the cities were protected by huge walls, most of them lost confidence. They feared that they would be killed by the Canaanites. “The people of Canaan are far mightier than us. We do not have the strength to defeat them” they told Moses. Negative thoughts of this nature caused them to be troubled with anxiety. They were worried that their wives and children would die in the hands of the Canaanites. Many were ready to elect a new leader and return to Egypt.

But then Moses said, “Have no dread or fear of them. The LORD, your God, who goes before you, is the one who will fight for you, just as he acted with you before your very eyes in Egypt” (Deuteronomy 1:29-30).

But they failed to listen to Moses. Instead they took to heart those thoughts that caused fear in them. They forgot about the truth that they had God with them—the same God who parted the Red Sea, the same God who split the rock and provided them water when they were thirsty. Certain words from ordinary people and situations can very well diminish the courage that we possess. They pretty much talk about the strength of the enemy, the abundance of challenges, and the proximity to danger. This will only kindle fear in us.

However, Joshua and Caleb, led by the Spirit of God, said, “Let us go right now and defeat the Canaanites. God has given us the strength for this.” When we face problems and challenges, we must learn to listen to the voice of God. Then we will be able to hear, “Do not fear: I am with you; do not be anxious: I am your God. I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my victorious right hand” (Isaiah 41:10).

Are we turning to God only we finally have nowhere to turn? When times are good, are we living according to our own wishes and not thinking about God? If the answers to these questions were yes, then we need to remind ourselves of the one important factor for God’s protection and intervention in our lives is to turn to God not only in bad times, but also in good times. Jesus said, “But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be given unto you” (Matthew 6:33).

Our Heavenly Father is well aware of every worry and anxiety that is disturbing us. Our Lord is constantly seeking our attention—when we seek God, He will intervene for us. ”Therefore do not be anxious saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ All these things the pagans seek. Your heavenly Father knows that you need them all” (Matthew 6:31-32).

Pagans are non-believers. They are people who do not know God and therefore do not accept that God is their Father. Anxiety is the sign of the non-understanding of God. Anxiety should be something that God’s people must be able to withstand. “He who did not spare his own Son but handed him over for us all, how will he not also give us everything else along with him?” (Romans 8:32). Therefore, “Have no anxiety at all, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, make your requests known to God. Then the peace of God that surpasses all understanding will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:6-7).
